Tucson & Mt. Lemmon in 4 Days: The Full Lemmon Drop and Desert Tech

4 daysExpertBig descents and desert tech

This is the trip for riders who came to Tucson to descend. You spend three days getting sharp on the desert's rocky, exposed tech, then commit to the Full Lemmon Drop, 30-plus miles and five biomes from the 9,100-foot pine forest down to the cactus at the base. It's a long, remote, expert day with hike-a-bike and no resupply, so the desert days aren't filler, they're prep.

The plan

Three days sharpening on desert tech, then the Full Lemmon Drop as the payoff.

Day 1

Desert tech shakedown at Starr Pass

Morning: Start close to town at Starr Pass, 15 minutes from downtown. Park at the Richard Genser trailhead behind Starr Pass Golf Resort and run the classic Rock Wren to Yetman to Starr Pass Trail loop. Rocky and chunky with real teeth and zero shade, it's a good read on how your bike and body handle Sonoran rock.

Afternoon: Spin an easy afternoon lap at Fantasy Island to keep the legs moving. Big dirt lot off Harrison Rd and Irvington, counterclockwise only. Fast and fun, far less punishing than the morning.

Eats: Pueblo Vida Brewing Company downtown. Bike inside, pint on the patio.

Day 2

The 50 Year Trail and The Chutes

Morning: Head to the Golder Ranch Road trailhead in Oro Valley for the 50 Year Trail. Grab an Arizona State Lands recreation permit first. Skip past the flowy lower stuff and get into the upper section: rocky, technical, big granite slabs, and 'The Chutes' near the north end. This is the desert's answer to the tech you'll hit on Lemmon.

Afternoon: Keep the afternoon short. You want fresh legs for the big days coming, so don't cook yourself here.

Eats: Catalina Brewing Company on the north side, an easy stop after the 50 Year Trail. Ride in for a dollar off, use the tools if you need trailside repairs sorted, and hit the shower.

Day 3

Recon the Lemmon Drop finish

Morning: Preview the mountain with the shorter Lemmon Drop. Shuttle up to Green Mountain with Home Grown, which stops there on the way up, and descend through Bug Springs and Molino Basin to La Milagrosa. It's rated advanced and shares the lower terrain with the full link-up, so it's the best way to learn the bottom of the descent before you commit to the whole thing tomorrow.

Afternoon: Ride within yourself and save something. Prep tonight: top off sealant, pack tubes and plugs, set out 3-plus liters, and lay out your pads.

Eats: El Guero Canelo. Cheap, fast Sonoran street food to load up the night before. The original is on N Oracle Rd.

Day 4

The Full Lemmon Drop

Morning: The big one. Home Grown shuttles you to the Aspen Draw Trailhead at the summit near Summerhaven; the shuttle departs 9am from the Horsehead/Suzenu meeting point. Ride 30+ miles down, linking Green Mountain, Bug Springs, Molino Basin, and La Milagrosa. Five biomes, expert terrain, significant hike-a-bike and exposed rocky sections. Carry 3+ liters minimum, there is no resupply, and start early because the full link-up is a 6-plus-hour day in remote country.

Afternoon: Finish at La Milagrosa thoroughly spent. This is Tucson's Whole Enchilada; if you rode it clean, you earned whatever comes next.

Eats: El Guero Canelo again for the payoff. James Beard-winning carne asada tacos and Sonoran hot dogs, exactly what you want after 30 miles of descending.

Pro tips

  • Run CushCore or similar inserts for the Lemmon Drop. Volcanic rock, cholla, and goatheads punish tires, so go tubeless with 4+ oz sealant and carry plugs and a spare tube.
  • The Full Lemmon Drop is a 6-plus-hour, no-resupply day. Carry 3+ liters, start early, and skip it if the desert tech days left you cooked.
  • Book the Home Grown shuttle and reserve your Earlybird bike well ahead. Both are small operations; the shuttle leaves 9am from the Horsehead/Suzenu point and Earlybird takes reservations online only.
