Bentonville with Kids: The Best Family-Friendly MTB Destination in America
Bentonville has more purpose-built singletrack per capita than anywhere in the US, and a surprising amount of it works for families. Here's how to plan a trip with riders of all levels.
Why Bentonville
Bentonville has something no other MTB destination can match: a massive trail network that starts right in town. You can ride from your hotel to world-class singletrack. No shuttle needed, no long drive to the trailhead. For families, that changes everything.
The trail system is also incredibly well-graded. Slaughter Pen and the Bentonville Trail System have green and blue loops that actual beginners can ride — not "beginner" trails that are secretly intermediate.
Where to Ride with Kids
Slaughter Pen is the starting point. The green loops are smooth, flowy, and well-signed. Kids who can ride a bike can ride these trails. The blue loops add some features but stay manageable.
Coler Mountain Bike Preserve is a step up — rated advanced, with downhill runs, jump lines, and progressive features. It's not a beginner zone, but experienced teen riders who are comfortable on steep terrain will have a blast. The bike playground area is worth a stop for younger kids to watch and learn.
For older kids or teens who ride: Back 40 is the real deal. It's a longer loop with more exposure and technical features, but it's still rideable for a strong intermediate rider.
Logistics
- Season: Year-round, but spring (March-May) and fall (September-November) are ideal. Summers are hot and humid.
- Bikes: Mojo Cycling and Phat Tire Bike Shop both rent quality bikes — Phat Tire is walkable to Slaughter Pen from the town square. Call ahead to confirm kids' bike availability. Reserve during peak season.
- After the ride: The Bentonville square has restaurants, ice cream, and Crystal Bridges Museum. It's a real town, not just a trailhead.
The Non-Rider Spouse
This matters. Bentonville has Crystal Bridges (world-class art museum, free admission), The Momentary, downtown shopping, and solid restaurants. The non-riding half of the family won't be bored. That alone makes it a better family MTB trip than most destinations.
