Crested Butte, CO
Gunnison Valley, Colorado
The birthplace of mountain biking — high-alpine wildflower singletrack, a short savage season, and the deepest trail culture in Colorado.
About Crested Butte
Crested Butte sits at 8,885 feet with most rides topping 10,000-11,000 feet, which means the season is brutally short and every rideable day feels like a gift. Trail 401 is the signature — wildflower-lined alpine singletrack with views that make it hard to watch the trail. CBMBA has maintained 450+ miles of singletrack since 1983 — this is where mountain biking's trail advocacy movement started.
Riding season is roughly late June through early October. Snow lingers on high-alpine trails (401, Teocalli) into early July most years. Lower trails like the Loop system melt out first (mid-June). Afternoon thunderstorms are near-daily July through August — plan alpine rides for morning starts. Wildflower bloom peaks mid-July. First significant snow typically mid-to-late October.

Gear Essentials
What you'll want to bring or buy before the trip. Opinionated picks based on the terrain, climate, and rides.
Weather Layers
Crested Butte is HIGH — most rides are 9,000-11,300 ft. Afternoon thunderstorms are near-daily July-August. A packable rain shell is non-negotiable for any alpine ride. Morning starts at 9K can be in the 40s even in July.
Hydration
Altitude + climbing-heavy rides = dehydrate faster than you think. 2L minimum for anything over 2 hours. Doctor Park and Reno-Flag-Bear have no resupply for 20 miles.
Tires
CB trails are alpine dirt, roots, and rocky tech. Trail casings with good grip work for most rides — no DH casings needed unless lapping the bike park. Soft compounds grip well on the moist alpine singletrack.
Protection
Knee pads for Teocalli, Doctor Park, and the bike park. Full-face for DH laps at CBMR. Alpine descents have rocky sections that come up fast when you're tired — pads earn their weight.

Epic Rides
Trail 401
The signature Crested Butte ride — high-alpine wildflower singletrack with views of the Elk Mountains that make it genuinely hard to keep your eyes on the trail.
Shuttle: No commercial shuttle for 401 — most riders pedal up Gothic Road to Schofield Pass. Hitchhiking with passing trucks is common and generally works.
Season: Snow doesn't clear from the 11,300 ft apex until late June or early July. Peak conditions mid-July through September. Wildflower bloom is staggering in July. Afternoon thunderstorms above treeline are dangerous — start early.
Beta: Park at the Gothic/Judd Falls trailhead (end of Gothic Road, 7 mi north of CB). Climb 4.5 mi up FS 317 to Schofield Pass. Loop is typically ridden counter-clockwise: up the road, across the alpine traverse, down through aspens. The descent through wildflower meadows on Mt. Belleview is about as good as mountain biking gets. Bring a layer — exposed at 11K and weather changes fast.
Teocalli Ridge
A punishing climb to one of Colorado's best ridgeline descents — five miles of tech, flow, and steeps above 11,000 feet.
Season: Rideable mid-July through September once snow clears from the ridge. Fully exposed alpine — afternoon lightning is real. Morning starts only.
Beta: Start from Brush Creek Road, 2 miles south of CB. Climb is the real test: gentle 5-mile dirt road warm-up, then brutally steep 2-mile singletrack push to 11,300 ft. The descent makes it all worth it — five miles of varied terrain with switchbacks. Two creek crossings en route.
Doctor Park
A classic CB descent — five miles of fast flow mixed with rocky tech, accessed via a long road grind.
Shuttle: Can be self-shuttled to top of Doctor Gulch Road, but shuttle traffic isn't permitted past the creek crossing. Most riders pedal the full 20-mile loop.
Season: Lower elevation than 401/Teocalli — opens earlier, typically late June. Rideable through early October.
Beta: Full loop starts at North Bank Campground on the Taylor River — 20 miles and 2,700 ft of climbing. The descent rewards the effort: starts rocky, opens to fast flow, then gets technical again. Carry water for the climb — no resupply.
Lower Loop / Upper Lower Loop
The town trails — mellow valley singletrack along the Slate River. Perfect warm-up or rest day.
Season: First trails to melt out — rideable by mid-June. Season extends through October.
Beta: Access from town via Butte Avenue — trail on your left just past the last house. 4-mile Lower Loop follows the Slate River. Add Upper Lower Loop for more distance. Easy linking with Woods Walk and Budd Trail.
Crested Butte Mountain Bike Park
Lift-served gravity at the resort — 25+ trails from green flow to double-black rock gardens via the Red Lady Express.
Lift access: Red Lady Express high-speed quad with self-load bike trays. Bike haul tickets required.
Season: Opens early-to-mid June, runs daily through Labor Day, then weekends through early September.
Beta: Base is in Mt. Crested Butte — free Mountain Express bus from downtown CB. Rent DH bikes at Crested Butte Sports (35 Emmons Rd) and walk to the lift. Green trails are genuinely beginner-friendly. 30+ miles of singletrack.
Reno-Flag-Bear-Deadman
The CB XC epic — four trails linked for 20 miles of punchy climbs and long rowdy descents through Cement Creek drainage.
Season: Opens mid-to-late June. Max elevation 11,100 ft — respect the afternoon lightning window.
Beta: Start at Deadman's Gulch trailhead off Cement Creek Road. Links four trails: Reno Road climbs 1,400 ft in 3 mi, Flag Creek drops 1,000 ft in 3 mi, Bear Creek mellows through meadows with creek crossings, Deadman's Gulch caps it with 30+ switchbacks. This is an endurance ride — bring food and 2L+ of water.
